Abstract
Virtually all direct methods techniques are multisolutional: they produce more than one phase set, and, indeed, often produce thousands and even more. The problem then arises as to how to establish which phase set is correct in the sense of having the lowest phase error (assuming there is such a set). To do this, figures of merit (FOMs) are used in which the phases are tested against invariants and seminvariants to establish consistency criteria. It is the purpose of this chapter to examine such criteria, and to look critically at their efficacy in a macromolecular phasing environment.
