Abstract
A literature review of forest management practices for biological diversity in plantation forests was undertaken. The review revealed many ways of increasing levels of Biological Diversity but there were very few examples of standards being used. Here, the concept of ‘standard’ is explored and the role of standards in management of forest plantations for biological diversity is appraised. Recognition of different perceptions of standards and flexibility in standards are suggested. A theoretical framework for biological diversity standards which recognises spatial and temporal components is suggested. It is concluded there should be more than just aims and objectives for management of plantations forests for different levels of Biological Diversity; the use of standards could improve forest management practices. We suggest that the concept of standards has wide applications in biological conservation.
