Abstract

A number of measures have been proposed to quantify species diversity in a community from theoretical, mathematical or ecological point of views. For an updated review of these proposals see Gove et al. (1994). Obviously, all of these indexes are functions, say Δ (N), of the unknown abundance vector N = [N 1, N 2…, N k ]T, where N l represents the number of units belonging to each species (N l > 0, l = 1,2,…,k)when there is a total of k species in the entire population. Accordingly, the problem consists in the estimation of A by means of suitable statistics on the basis of a sampling design.
