Abstract

Let us now systematically examine the possibility of generating the languages L 1,L 2, L 3 below with grammars of the types considered up to now:

$$ {L_1} = \left\{ {{a^n}{b^n}{c^n}\left| {n \geqslant 1} \right.} \right\}, $$

,

$${L_2} = \left\{ {xcx\left| {x \in {{\left\{ {a,b} \right\}}^*}} \right.} \right\}, $$

,

$${L_3} = \left\{ {{a^n}{b^m}{c^n}{d^m}\left| {n,m \geqslant 1} \right.} \right\}, $$

Bibliographical Notes

  • Contextual grammars with minimal and maximal use of selectors are introduced in [113]; grammars with a scattered use of contexts are also considered in that paper. Most of the results in Sections 9.1 and 9.2 are based on [113]. Slight improvements in the other results are given here. Lemma 9.15 is from [111]. Theorem 9.3 is from [110], where it is also observed that grammars with maximal use of selectors cover all the three basic non-context-free constructions in natural languages. Section 9.3 is based on [110], [112].
