Abstract
I have always believed that ethics is, or at least ought to be, practical, that ethical theory ought to be useful to the individual in making rational choices and acting morally. Still, I received my philosophical education in the United States and in a period when metaethics of the most abstract sort was all the fashion. This probably explains why only after publishing one book on the meaning of ethical sentences and another on the justification of ethical statements, did I turn my philosophical investigations to problems more relevant to moral decisions and political debates.
