Potential for geographical information systems (GIS) in fisheries management

  • Chapter

Abstract

Much of the substance of this chapter is speculative. For reasons which will be made clear, GIS has yet to play any direct role in what might broadly be described as the fisheries industry. Since the time is rapidly approaching when this branch of information technology (IT) will make its presence strongly felt here, it is appropriate both to set out the potential for GIS in fisheries research and development and to suggest ways in which its implementation might begin and progress. The reasons for this confidence in GIS are rooted in the observed benefits which it has brought to the management of many terrestrial-based activities, and to the consequent accelerating expansion in the progress and fortunes of the whole GIS sector.
