Abstract
The future is by definition unknown and unknowable, never more so than when attempting to make predictions concerning a free economy operating within a political marketplace. When that marketplace is itself undergoing fundamental change, as is the case with the integration of European economies into the Single European Market, the past becomes a poor guide to the future. This chapter aims to identify the influences which will shape the future of the UK defence industry, to assess the relative importance of each and then suggest the implications of this tentative balance of probabilities for defence companies.
