Abstract

In the language of supramolecular chemistry, a switch defines a component (the control unit) existing in two states of comparable stability. The reversible access to each state is determined by an external parameter and each state may drastically modify a property displayed by an adjacent component (the active unit). Two-component systems have been designed in which the luminescence of an anthracene fragment (the active unit) is switched on/off through a control unit sensitive either to pH or to the redox potential. In the first case, an appended dioxotetramine subunit at a given pH selectively binds transition metal ions (i.e. CuII, NiII) and anthracene fluorescence is quenched. In the second case, a thiacyclam ring has been linked, through an estereal bridge, to the anthracene framework. Switching is provided by the CuI/CuII couple incorporated by the tetra-thia macrocycle, as the CuII state quenches fluorescence and CuI does not. Finally, the control of the acidity of the carboxylic group through an appended ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple has been investigated by voltammetric studies carried out at varying pH. Different voltammetric responses have been obtained depending whether the pH has been varied through a buffer or through an acid-base titration.
