Abstract
Rosa Luxemburg claimed that ‘the realization of socialism will be the end of economics as a science.’ Her prediction was wrong. Actually the reverse is closer to the truth: The end of communism gives an enormous jolt to economics as a science. The transition in Eastern Europe not only has far-reaching human and social implications, but also can be interpreted as a huge economic laboratory. Eastern Europe could be seen as the economists’ superconductive super collider. It is not a neat laboratory situation, and testing economic theories and ideas about transition from a command economy to a market economy will be more trial-and-error than well set up research procedures.
