Abstract
Shallow-water flow is just one of the many special forms in which hydrodynamics presents itself. Actually, contrary to what the name suggests, the fluid does not have to be water. Certain aspects of flow in the atmosphere are described by the shallow-water equations (SWE) as well. The essential point is that the thickness a of the fluid layer is small compared with some typical horizontal length scale L. This is the only really common point in the various applications. There are several other parameters which may be either large or small, leading to variants of the SWE.
