Abstract
Shallow-water flow might seem to be a too special subject to devote a complete book to, but it is actually quite common. Many types of flow, not necessarily involving water as a fluid, can be characterized as shallow-water flows. The general characteristic of such flows is that the vertical dimension is much smaller than any typical horizontal scale and this is true in many everyday situations. This chapter gives a number of illustrations.
