Abstract
This paper begins with a description of the Kathmandu Valley in the context of Nepal. It then outlines the demographics of Kathmandu Valley before describing in some depth the geological and seismological aspects of the seismic hazard existing there. After a summary of the emergency response capabilities of the existing infrastructure, it moves to the current level of seismic awareness, current design practices, and the possible resources that could be mobilised to improve these.
