Abstract
The basic physics laid out in the previous two chapters will now be used to develop a formalism for the transfer of polarized radiation in a magnetized stellar atmosphere. The ordinary polarized transfer equation without scattering will be derived in the present chapter, while scattering and the Hanle effect will be taken care of in the next chapter.
