Abstract
The natural grassland has generally been the subject of neglect, both by farmers and by pasture research officers. Perhaps these grasslands seem not spectacular enough: they lack the dramatic response to management as displayed by cultivated pastures, react slowly to the onset of the rains and cease growth earlier at the end. Natural grassland is often associated in a negative sense with one or more of the following characteristics (Table 4.1):
