Abstract
For most of the period since the late fifties the world shipbuilding scene has been dominated by competition between the yards of the traditional maritime countries of Western Europe and their Far-Eastern counterparts. During most of this period, the US shipbuilders have been practically absent from the international shipbuilding market, as they were operating solely on their national one, well-insulated from the outside competition by legal provisions.
