Abstract
In this paper, in connection with a case study, we would like to illustrate how environmental problems emerged in Hungary, what the response of the general public was to such problems, how environmental movements became organized, and how all this fit into the major political changes characterizing the period between 1985–1990.
Public attitudes outlined in this paper were partially derived from a public opinion survey conducted by the Hungarian Institute of Public Opinion Research. We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Klara Farago, Katalin Solymosi, and Terez Wekler in conducting the survey.
