The energy sector: a hidden Goliath

Abstract

In developed countries wood is considered too valuable to use as a fuel, although the burning of wood residues is universal. Therefore it comes as a surprise to learn that in the United States the quantity of wood used for energy exceeds the combined total of that for paper, sawn timber and wood panels. Much of this energy is derived from burning industrial wood residues, while the balance (about one-third) comes from round-wood removals, primarily from less intensively managed, non-industrial private forest lands. Domestic wood-burning stoves are the predominant users of this roundwood (Fig. 14.1).
