Abstract
The optical structure of M31 provided one of the earliest puzzles about this galaxy and it has continued to present us with intriguing questions. It took good photographs to show that the object has a spiral shape and it has taken a number of more sophisticated techniques to discover the more subtle aspects of its structure. This chapter begins, as a way of introducing the development of the field, with a brief survey of the various techniques used.
