Part of the book series: Topics in Inclusion Science ((TISC,volume 4))

Abstract

Infrared spectroscopy has proven to be a most useful tool for the characterization of the zeolite adsorbent by its functional groups, i.e. the different building units of the framework, the hydroxyl groups and the cations, as well as the molecules adsorbed on the internal surface of this special group of porous solids. A large number of infrared studies at the solid/vapour interface in general has been reviewed in three books [1–3], of which only a few investigations pertain to zeolites. Reviews more specifically concerned with the zeolite surface have also appeared in turn [4–8]. Therefore this chapter will concentrate mainly on results obtained by infrared spectroscopy, published in the eighties. Only a brief survey will be given on complementary methods like Raman and UV-VIS spectroscopy, EXAFS etc.
