Abstract
Hydrocyclones have been evaluated and designed mainly in terms of the “Separation Efficiency” or the “Cyclone Number”. As a result, the hydrocyclone is less effective in thickening.
In this paper, an efficiency criterion is found suitable to the hydrocyclone for thickening. In terms of the efficiency criterion, an optimum cyclone thickener with a cylindrical body has been abtained on the basis of experiment. Compared with a commercial conical hydrocyclone, the cylindrical cyclone thickener has high capacity in thickening with low pressure drop across the cyclone body.
