Abstract

Although coeliac disease (CD) is strongly associated with the codominantly expressed HLA alleles B8 and DR3, the genetic basis of this illness remains unclear. Recent studies show that at least two unlinked gene loci are involved. A report by Pena et al in 1978 suggested that one of these genes is dominant and the other recessive, but the analysis of Greenberg and Rotter in 1981 did not support a dominant component and instead was consistent with a double recessive gene model.
