Genetic and Biochemical Studies on the Nodulation Genes of Rhizobium Leguminosarum bv. Viciae

Abstract

A strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae deleted for the nodFELMNTO genes (but retaining nodDABCIJ) is unable to nodulate vetch. The deletion mutant can be partially corrected for nodulation by plasmids carrying nodO or nodFE. However the structures and predicted functions of the nodO and nodFE gene products are very different. nodO is a host-specific nodulation gene and encodes a protein that is secreted by a specialised mechanism analogous to that required for haemolysin section. In contrast, the nodFE genes encode enzymes that appear to be involved in the formation of the host-specific root-hair curling factor. It appears that the nodM gene product is involved in the formation of glucosamine phosphate which is probably a precursor of the root hair curling molecule.
