Abstract

My work on social accounts began in 1973 as a response to the social indicators movement in the United States. This movement had been precipitated and encouraged by the many new social programs initiated in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations (1961–68) in an effort to create, in Johnson’s words, “a Great Society”.

“People live out their lives in a sequence of environmental units; experience in these settings is life. If the quality of experience is good, life expands; if it is bad, life diminishes.” P.V. Gump (1971, p. 134).
