Holocene Palaeo-Winds and Climatic Changes in West Greenland as Indicated by Long-Distance Transported and Local Pollen in Lake Sediments

  • Chapter
Climatic Changes on a Yearly to Millennial Basis

Abstract

Long-distance transported exotic pollen have repeatedly been used in correlating arctic pollen zones with more southerly ones, e.g. by Hyvärinen (1972) on Spitzbergen, and they have also been used in an attempt to reconstruct palaeo-winds reaching Baffin Island (Nichols et al. 1978; Andrews et al. 1979; see also discussion in Barry et al. 1981). Ten years ago I tried to trace source-areas of exotic pollen in S. Greenland lake diagrams (Fredskild 1973), but as a great deal of further material is now at hand (Fig. 1), it seems reasonable to make an up-to-date review.
