Part of the book series: Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures ((PCMB,volume 1))

Abstract

Although a soliton related phenomenon has been discovered by Scott-Russel [1] in 1834, it took a long time for solitons to acquire their present popularity. The object of the present chapter is two-fold: First we would like to familiarize the readers with the notion of solitons. This will be done through a brief historical introduction and with the help of some examples. Then some salient features of the sine-Gordon soliton are summarized in Section 2. Second we shall describe applications of the soliton notion to real systems. Section 3 is devoted to the magnetic systems, while Sections 4, 5 and 6 are devoted to the conducting systems. The general background for the present review may be found in [2–7]. In the following we shall sketch how the notion of soliton is developed and finds application in many branches of physics.
