Abstract

Three phase reacting systems are probably the most widely investigated subject in the area of chemical reaction engineering at the present time. Three phase reactors are used on a large scale in the petroleum industry for different hydroprocessing operations(hydrodesulfurization of residual oils, hydrodesulfurization and hydrocracking of gasoils) and also in the chemical industry (numerous hydrogenations and oxidations). Moreover, reactions involving gas, liquid and solid will be frequently used in the emerging fields of synthetic fuels (direct coal liquefaction, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis...) and of biotechnology.
