Abstract

It is no exaggeration to say that at no other time in history has mankind undergone such a thoroughgoing change in life-style as we have in the past one hundred years. The technological advances of the past century have radically transformed people’s lives everywhere. Increased scientific knowledge has resulted in improvements in living conditions hitherto undreamed of. Among them are the prolongation of human life through the control of disease and starvation, the improvement of irrigation and sanitation, the mechanization of agriculture, and the mass production of consumer goods.
