Hypertension due to Excessive Dietary Sodium and/or Adrenal Steroids

  • Chapter
Blood Pressure Control

Part of the book series: Blood Pressure Control ((BPCO,volume 1))

Abstract

When a large amount of salt is given acutely, it is rapidly excreted by the kidneys. When the same amount is administered chronically, it usually produces a gradual but steady increase in arterial pressure which might be due to declining kidney function. The hypertensive process can be quickened and exacerbated by combining a high sodium intake with partial nephrectomy or added mineralocorticoids.
