Abstract
The title ‘Problems of Adoption’ is very wide and I must deal with it somewhat superficially and selectively. I will first outline the establishment and structure of adoption services in Ireland. I will then go on to describe the changing needs of the children who need adoptive families and some of the problems these raise. I will discuss adoptive parents and particularly those who are infertile or childless and the problems they raise. I will not use the word ‘problem’ much since although I will be raising matters for consideration and drawing attention to specific possible difficulties, I would not like adoption and all that surrounds it to be seen too negatively.
