Abstract
Preterm infants are at a greater risk from respiratory failure and are prone to longer and more frequent apnoeic episodes than full-term infants (Waggener et al, 1982). Such apnoea can produce acute hypoxaemia which may, in turn, result in neurological damage or even death. In addition, the biphasic response to hypoxia disappears after 1–2 weeks in full-term infants but not until after the first month in preterm infants (Rigatto, 1979). The preterm infants show a progressively larger initial response (first phase) with age, suggesting that this apparent difference is chemoreceptor-dependent (Haddad and Mellins, 1984).
