Regulation of Neuropeptide Levels in Sensory Receptors and Autonomic Ganglia

  • Chapter
Chemoreceptors in Respiratory Control

Abstract

In recent years, several laboratories have identified the neuropeptides, substance P (SP) and met- and leuenkephalin (ME, LE) in the carotid bodies of several species (Lundberg et al., 1979: Wharton et al., 1980). Immunohistochemical techniques used in these studies have localized the enkephalins to the type I cells, while SP-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) was found in both nerve fibres (see also Jacobowitz and Helke, 1980) and 20% of the type I cells (Cuello and McQueen), 1980). The role of these peptides in carotid body function is not presently known (see recent review by McQueen, 1984): however, in other nervous tissue (e.g., substantia nigra [Hanson et al., 1981], spinal cord and sympathetic ganglia [Otsuka et al., 1982], and other structures [Chesselin et al., 1981],) these neuropeptides have been postulated to function as neurotransmitters or neuromodulators of synaptic action.
