Abstract

In the foregoing chapter we have seen that an asymmetric arrangement of marriage possibilities need not be accompanied by an organisation of the clans into two phratries, though an asymmetric system may very well be integrated into such an organisation. In order to arrive at a better understanding of the interrelations of the two types of structure, let us first take a closer look at the division of a tribe into clans and potential phratries.
