Abstract
Among various peoples of eastern Indonesia we find a remarkable system of regulations governing non-reciprocal marriages; this system is clearly of the greatest significance for our investigation into the nature and the systematic character of the culture of these peoples. It completely determines the interrelations and activities of the social groups, and is reflected also in myth and ritual. By starting from this system we shall arrive at a clear understanding of the form and meaning of these culture-types, and we shall find it possible to demonstrate the essential unity of social organisation, myth, and ritual.
