Abstract
The Elseviers were a large clan. Louis had nine children, and among these, their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren, there were fourteen who were booksellers, or printers, or both. The records of the multitude, their births, deaths, loves (insofar as they resulted in marriage), business transactions, and minor villainies are scattered through official records in the cities where they lived. The Elsevier businesses at The Hague and Utrecht were founded during the lifetime of Louis. It is of interest to follow the story of those who worked in these cities, as well as those who succeeded Louis at Leyden.
