Abstract
The Batak term used here for the law of inheritance means literally “the law relating to property left by a deceased”. If one seeks one term which will define this law as a whole, then one is confronted with the fact that this part of customary law has many aspects, and that it consists of several separate sub-divisions, each of which has its appropriate term. These terms are sometimes mixed up with each other in the popular language, but native law makes the distinction between each one quite clear.
