Abstract
Alexei Tolstoi was indeed enigmatic. Shifting ideological positions frequently, he gives one cause to ask: “Was this a sincere patriot, ever determined to support the policy most beneficial to the interests of his country, or a cunning opportunist protecting his personal position of wealth and power?”
