Abstract
It is small wonder, then, that Malay started to play an important role as the medium of communication for the nationalist movement too. It was prepared for this role especially by the Malay press which was well under way from 1900 onwards. In the beginning this press was represented by mainly Chinese-Malay newspapers, of little value as journalism:
Abusive small articles, in which feuds between the editors of the newspapers were entertained for days on end and local news items, unduly magnified, together with a few official announcements and some “faits divers” day after day formed the main contents of these papers!13
