Abstract

Next to the large Malay-Minangkabau area which occupies the centre of the island of Sumatra, we find in the language of Rejang another language which is undoubtedly independent although closely related to Malay. Not only the phonetic system deviates considerably from that of Malay, but also in its morphology the language proves to possess a structure of its own. However, in the vocabulary Malay influence is very strong and one may assume that it is still on the increase.
