Abstract
Infertility is defined as failure to achieve conception during one or more years of intercourse without use of any contraceptive measure (Behrman and Kistner, 1968). Primary infertility refers to the lack of pregnancy as defined above. Secondary infertility occurs in patients who were previously pregnant but fail to conceive during one or more years of unprotected intercourse. It is estimated that 10–15% of couples in the United States are infertile. Absolute infertility refers to totally irremediable bases of the problem, whereas relative infertility occurs in conditions which are correctible after diagnosis. Several factors may be responsible for the occurrence of infertility, including problems in the male as well as female components of the marital unit. In both sexes there are genetic-endocrine-metabolic, as well as mechanical factors, as the basis.
