Oestrogen and progesterone receptors

  • Chapter

Abstract

According to current views, steroid hormones function by binding to specific receptor proteins present in responsive cells. Although a general scheme of steroid interaction with the cell has been elucidated, the precise mechanism by which steroids enhance RNA and protein synthesis is still unknown. One central approach to the problem of understanding the mechanism of oestrogen action is by isolating, purifying and characterizing the various components of this mechanism and by studying the mode of interaction of these parts under simplified conditions in vitro, to contribute to knowledge of how the mechanism works as a whole.
