Abstract
I define the cosmos as all material objects and energies in space and time, all particles and all events. And I use the term “cosmos,” “cosmic universe” or “universe” interchangeably. The cosmic universe is not a simple affair except insofar as it may be said to constitute a whole; (and whether it is a whole and whether as a whole it is finite or infinite, we do not at present know). It will not be necessary here to decide whether the universe is a whole except for the purposes of regarding its contents as constituting an interrelated network in which all of the particles are involved in activity-reactivity systems at various energy-levels. By asserting that the universe is a whole we are committed to nothing more than the assertion of the unity of its contents. But if it is a whole then it is unique, there being only one such material thing of which this is true.
