Abstract

In considering ‘philosophy’ itself, as consciousness and the ego, let us turn first of all to a philosopher in history who is a good example of those who confuse ‘philosophy’ and phenomena to a remarkably small degree, namely, James Frederick Ferrier. We will also deal briefly with consciousness as revealed through the ego of Fichte and Lotze, showing points of strength and possible weakness (according to Grote) in each. First of all, then, we will consider the philosophical and the phenomenalist views as clearly distinguished by Ferrier.
