Abstract
As a result of this study, it is clear that Honthorst’s artistic formation took place during his years in Italy. There he attained the sound knowledge of Caravaggism which dominated his work during those years and which brought him widespread fame as “Gherardo delle Notti. ” Honthorst also studied other Italian styles, the results of which appeared quite strongly during his post-Italian years, thereby informing us that he must have studied them carefully in Italy.
