Abstract
Coeliac disease is reported to be mainly a disease of Europe and of countries with a high European immigration like USA, South Africa and Australia. Undoubtedly the disease also exists in non-European populations. For example coeliac disease has been documented in Indian Asians and in an African Negro child from Nigeria1,2. Genetic factors seem to influence the incidence of the disease. Reports on the frequency of coeliac disease in children within Europe show considerable variation. They range from 1:6500 in Sweden, 1:1100 in the city of Glasgow, 1:890 in Switzerland, to 1:597 births in the West of Ireland3–6.
