Abstract
The third major grouping of auto-immune disease comprises those conditions which wholly or predominantly involve a single organ or tissue. There are many forms of localized auto-immune disease with thyroid, gastric mucosa, and adrenal as the sites for some of the better-studied examples. As in other fields, there is no universally acceptable interpretation of the conditions to be discussed in this chapter. No one questions that all present important immunopathological aspects, but it can usually be claimed that these are the secondary consequences of pathological changes in the organ induced by some primary etiological agent. This suggests that it may be useful to precede discussion of the various local conditions with a brief consideration at a general level.
