Abstract
The principal uses of amino acids by ruminants are for synthesis of proteins, maintenance of body tissues and gluconeogenesis. In the fed state, the essential and non-essential amino acids or the amino groups for synthesis of a portion of the non-essential amino acids are absorbed from the digestive tract. In the fasted state, the amino acids are supplied from the degradation of body tissues, primarily skeletal muscle.
