Abstract

Varicella and zoster are different manifestations of infection with the same agent, which is generally referred to as varicella-zoster virus. The identity was first shown by Weiler and Coons (1954) in immunofluorescence studies carried out with antisera from patients who had suffered from the two diseases. Cultures of human embryo skin-muscle cells infected with strains of virus isolated from the lesions of varicella and zoster stained equally well with both antisera and it was thus not possible to detect any antigenic difference between them.
