Abstract
The herpesviruses contain two genera, Herpesvirus and Cytomegalovirus. A simplified classification is shown in Table 5.1. The genus Herpesvirus consists of two recognized subgroups. Subgroup A contains three viruses which infect man: herpes (simplex), B virus and Pseudorabies. Subgroup B contains only varicella-zoster. Apart from these there are a number of viruses of animals which await classification. The genus Cytomegalovirus {tly|99-1} contains one virus infecting man, that of cytomegalic inclusion disease, and a number of related viruses mainly affecting rodents.
