Abstract

The cultivated potato originated in the highlands of the Andes in South America (Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia) and was first brought to Europe by the Spanish explorers in 1537. The potato had been cultivated by the Incas for over 2000 years prior to the Spanish discovery.
