Abstract

Second-order free-running hysteretic regulators (Fig. 9-1) have been around for a long time [1] but their analysis still intrigues the designer [2]. They represent the simplest possible type of switching regulators. The intrinsic advantage of hysteretic regulators is the small number of parts, resulting in high reliability and low cost. In spite of that advantage, they are not widely used, probably because the theory of operation is rather involved ([1] through [8]) and no straightforward design or analysis method is available.
